Calendula

Family Compositae or Asteraceae. This perennial plant, with small yellow or orange flowers grows to a height of 1.5 feet tall and blooms until temperatures reach freezing. The overall plant gives off an unpleasant odor but the flowers - tiny yellow and orange - are edible and are even used in fragrances. Geography: Though its origin is unknown, it grows wildly in Europe, North America and Asia and is popular in gardens everywhere.

Historical Uses

Often referred to as “Nature’s First Aid Kit” due to its healing and calming properties. Ancient Romans gave the plant its name (Latin: kalends) after they noticed the plant blooming on the first day of each month and considered this plant a symbol of joy and happiness. Hindus use it to decorate their temples. This antioxidant rich plant has been used over time in medicines and skincare for its positive impact on the appearance of skin.
